In late 1979, a disaster near Haydarpaşa, Istanbul in the early hours of the morning causes major changes in the lives of the residents of Selimiye Neighborhood.
1979 is a year of inconsistency in Türkiye. Despite the economic crisis, reshuffled government, and societal qualms, the residents of the Selimiye Neighborhood on the Asian side of Istanbul are still doing somewhat okay and charismatic and respected Ali is the undesignated leader. But one day everything changes. In a catastrophic collision with the Greek cargo ship MV Evriali, MT Independenta, a Romanian crude oil carrier, burns and sinks in the Bosphorus. The collision leads to the worst environmental calamity in the strait. Meanwhile, Ali’s son Oğuz hides his fugitive girlfriend in the neighborhood.
